Just want to add ...
... to what others have written about this short but hot show. TMNS is worth checking out just by itself. It has a longer, much more developed interlude jam (the 6/8 jam before the finale) than most 70's Musics. The finale is an example of what Jerry meant by "jacking off the audience," but no one fails to get off from this one. Then again, he's pretty much wailing the whole show -- Tennessee Jed is particularly good here, as is Passenger, pretty much every song. That said, the first set could have used a bit more, maybe a Lazy > Supp, Dancin', or Scarlet>Fire. So could the second for that matter. The recording, other than the tape flip in Truckin' (hardly can avoid that), is top notch.

Don't Murder Me!
What is my rating system?
If I enjoy the show enough to focus in on it despite all the other stuff that competes for me attention it is going to get a pretty good rating.
Sound is pretty key as well. I like this show for the vocals.
Set list and execution- This 1st set is pretty varied in song selection also enjoy listening to the running commentary from the band.
They actually banter about a BOX of Rain request from the audience. They do a little Hawaiian ditty which I guess is Yellow Bird just before ripping into Passenger.
Do they jam? that is always the big question
Yeah, they are the jam band before there was such an actual term. There is a great deal of subjectivity to all of this.
Probably better to just enjoy it for enjoyments sake. I mean I really like the music, if I get into a rut I just step away but since 1984 I have always come back.
To me this is the music of my time. granted the first 18 years of my life I was oblivious that this was going to be the soundtrack of my life.
There is some neat playing going on underneath the Peggy-o not sure if that is Weir or Keith? good separation.
Anyway great ballad choices by Garcia in the 1st set.
Lovely MUSIC NEVER...
For the 2nd set just gonna turn it over to the reviews that I read here during the MNS jam
A BAND BEYOND DESCRIPTION---indeed.
kick back as the music plays the band.

started touring in 82,at 14, so for me
This brings back memories of shows I didn't see. It wasn't until 8/30/85 when I was 17 that I went this far from Boston to see a show (Houston). I should have started touring as soon as I could walk, but my parents had other ideas. Ihad to waituntilI was 14 t see these people, but at that point people used to tell me "youn ever see those people anyways. So I did.

En Fuego
This is probably one of the hottest fall 77 2nd sets in terms of energy - everything from Estimated on is simply off the charts.
Wharf Rat is just wonderfully delivered. The peak in Truckin is seriously mangled, but the jam is so freaking hot you might not notice or care. And Around and Around might be the most insane version ever played.

Might as well
This one's good, Jerry's smoking and Keith sounds great, tighter, but I still prefer the energy coming off on the 10-29 version.

Best Might As Well...Ever
Some people will say 6-17-91 is the best, get real. How can ANYTHING in 1991 be a 'best of' version?
This 'Might' is so powerful, so...I don't know, belligerent-it demands to be played at the loudest level you can possibly stand.
Other canidates for 'best of' versions are: PeggyO, Tenn Jed, and FOTD. Uh...this show kicks serious ass, I recommend an immediate listen!

Detroit Rock City
This is good, solid show that in another year might have been a 5, but not '77. Fav tunes of the show are FOTD, LLR, Music, Estimated and Wharf Rat. Definitely good from a technical standpoint (
i.e., playing, recording quality)...

5 stars for quality & music
I love 77' Dead (amongst other years) and being able to stream a clean Betty Board is a godsend! My friends and I would have flipped out over getting recordings of this quality back in the day (early to mid 80's, for me)A+ quality! 5 stars for a crisp Betty Board,5 stars for being able to stream this stuff!

Thankful for deadboots
The soundboard is still available at
deadboots.com. (I've been searching the net for SBDs.) The recording there is not nearly as good as this version. This one is really good. "The Music Never Stopped" sounds like maybe it never will - "they're a band beyond description" for sure. U.S. Blues enchore is the heaviest one I've heard - it is so powerful that it sounds like they are ready to do another set. Glad to hear this concert from my hometown.

Best Wharf Rat ever?
This is certainly in the top three. This is really 2 shows wrapped up in one. Set I and Terrapin which is fine for an exceptional year - Music and Tenn Jed are exceptional FOTD too, Then Set II less Terrapin where they dump fuel into the afterburners and they are off to the races...Est>Other One is f+cking ridiculous, Wharf, Truckin is really wierd sounding and great in fact this whole show sounds like they are stoned and playing borrowed instruments - Listen to Keith in LL Rain there are these wierd harmonics and harmonies I have never heard before.
All of this said, this is 18 songs which is short 5/25/77 (a well deserved 5) which this show reminds me alot of is like this all the way through while this 3 songs short and does not rip your nails out ALL THE WAY THROUGH the way that does - Sorry guys dont hate me I loved the last 1/2.

This was my 2nd Dead concert. And it was just 5 days from my birthday!! Anyways, I've had a tape of it for a while, but this version is much better. Needless to say it was an awsome show and gets better with age!

What a show for the record books,I just can't believe how good this concert is. You have to experience this show not listen experience cause this is a true work of Grateful Dead magic. The sound quality is just fantastic. And the terrapin into estimated into other one into drums and finally into wharf rat is some of the finest jamming transition you can get from these boys and god knows this show owns the five star rating .I know god is a dead fan and he be blown away by this show if he got it on the trading grap vine .

True gem.
This show just gets better and better. I love it when in Truckin', they peak and everybody sort of hits the peak at different times, so Jerry makes them do it again. Classic stuff. The more i listen to this show, the better it gets.

Cobo Arena
This show is typical of the last stretch of fall shows in terms of the chugging, heavy, and highly energetic playing, especially apparent in the second set. But the ball gets rolling so fast that in Other One, which ends only after 5 minutes, seems to blow a tire out taking the turns too fast. The Truckin better contains this energy and IMHO easily rivals that of Binghamton 5 nights later.
One glitch not listed in the text file is a reel flip during Truckin. Very good sound for these later '77 shows...
